Benefits of Leaving Home for College

A little more than half of all DYC freshmen choose to live on campus.  Many students choose to commute, because they live within an hour radius of the school. As for me, I’m from a little town in New York State called Ticonderoga, located 8 hours away from D’Youville. I’ve found that there are many benefits to leaving my hometown and going to college far away.

Freedom to make your own choices: We all go off to college to work towards our dream profession. I started off college as a pre-pharmacy major only to decide I want to go into nursing. When you live home or in close proximity to home you lose the ability to choose 100% for yourself. For traditional students Mom and Dad want you to do one thing, while you may want to do another. Because I was far from home I was capable of making the choice of switching my major without the input from my parents (who were insistent upon me becoming a pharmacist). Continue reading

Everyone Loves Freebies: Blah Busters Day 2012

On Tuesday, D’Youville College celebrated the first day of spring the best way they know how to – declaring it a campus wide Blah Buster Day! For those of you who somehow missed the memo, 30+ offices and places on campus had free snacks, raffles, meals, and giveaways for the students to enjoy. Each semester, the faculty and staff set one or two days aside to say thanks to the students for all of their hard work. You may have heard of the “Student Appreciation Days” held each November; Blah Buster Day is the spring version of it! This time in March the semester seems never-ending and spring break unreachable, but the time passes a little more quickly with events as fun as Blah Buster Day (and with the great weather we have been having)! So this year on the first day of spring, I grabbed a few friends and ventured around campus to see what treasures we could find! Here are my top five favorite sites for treats this year with some very close runner-ups. Keep in mind a few of the places had been vanquished by hungry students before I even had a chance to get to them! Continue reading

Tank Top, Flip Flops, Shorts Yay Summer! Oh Wait… It’s March

Students enjoying the nice weather in tanks and flip flops

Just by taking a step outside today and soaking it all in one would hardly believe that it isn’t summer time!  The weather Buffalo is currently experiencing almost feels like a dream.  Please do not wake me up!  Who could have imagined wearing a tank top, flip flops, and shorts in the middle of March here in Buffalo?  New York City maybe, but Buffalo? Unless one is here experiencing it for themselves, it sounds like crazy talk!  However I’m not complaining. I’ll take this over three feet of snow any day! Let’s just hope this warm weather lasts and is not another cruel trick that Buffalo weather is playing. Continue reading

Life Down Under…A Study Abroad Interview

Me in Australia

What if you could pay about the same as you’d pay for a semester at DYC and take classes that count toward your major, but live somewhere fabulous for a few months? Not to say that Buffalo isn’t fabulous or anything, but just for a change of scenery, how about Australia? England? Italy? It’s all possible through D’Youville’s study abroad program.

Studying abroad is one of the best experiences a young adult can have.  Not only do you broaden your view of the world, but you also get to know yourself a lot better. There’s nothing like being on the other side of the world, away from everyone you know, to allow you to figure out who you really are.  How do I know this? I’ve been there. I spent my last semester of my first degree in Australia.  It was amazing. It was everything you’d imagine it to be. It was also a long time ago, which is why I met with DYC sophomore Gretchen Mau who did her study abroad in Sydney, Australia last semester. Continue reading
