A little more than half of all DYC freshmen choose to live on campus. Many students choose to commute, because they live within an hour radius of the school. As for me, I’m from a little town in New York State called Ticonderoga, located 8 hours away from D’Youville. I’ve found that there are many benefits to leaving my hometown and going to college far away.
Freedom to make your own choices: We all go off to college to work towards our dream profession. I started off college as a pre-pharmacy major only to decide I want to go into nursing. When you live home or in close proximity to home you lose the ability to choose 100% for yourself. For traditional students Mom and Dad want you to do one thing, while you may want to do another. Because I was far from home I was capable of making the choice of switching my major without the input from my parents (who were insistent upon me becoming a pharmacist). Continue reading
