I am about to share with you some of the best and most useful information that will help you make the most out of D’Youville. This information is out there and readily available to students, but unfortunately many students are oblivious to some of the great assets that D’Youville has to offer.
The Secret Garden
It’s not really a secret, but many of us refer to this unique study space as the secret garden because it is a beautiful garden that is tucked away directly behind the Koessler Administration Building (KAB) and the red walkway canopy. Most students do not use the back entrance to the KAB so this area is often easily overlooked.
There Are Bone Models in the Library
Last year the chiropractic department purchased bone models to be placed in the library for all students to use. This year the Student Association purchased additional models and the library plans to add more models in the near future. The models can be checked out with your student ID for three hours at a time to use within the library.
The Library is Not the Only Place with Study Rooms
There are study rooms available all over campus, but because they are not labeled study rooms many students are unaware that they can be used for studying. After 5pm the following rooms are available in the Bauer Family Academic Center (BFAC) and Dr. Pauline Alt Building (ALT): BFAC 105, BFAC 106, BFAC 204, ALT 530, and ALT 534. After 7pm the D’Youville Academic Center (DAC) study rooms on the 4th floor become available and DAC 231, DAC 232 are available all day. All study rooms are on a first come first serve basis.
Affordable Theatre Productions at the Kavinoky Theatre
The Kavinoky Theatre is an independent professional theater that is located in the KAB. The theatre puts on productions regularly and invites students to attend preview nights for free and regular season shows for a whopping $5! (Many of their productions cost the public about $32 per ticket). Students can also earn two complimentary tickets to the production by posting ten flyers around the Buffalo area about a month before the show opens.
The Montante Family Library has Entertainment Materials
Most people do not think about the library for entertainment purposes, but the library has collections of DVDs, CDs, comic books, novels, magazines, and several other materials available for students to check out with their student ID. They also have a children’s section on the 4th floor with the best pop-up books I have ever seen!
Student Association Meetings Are Open to All
Many students think that they are not allowed to sit in on Student Association meetings because the door is closed. All students are welcome to attend Student Association meetings, but the door is kept closed to keep out the noisy distractions from the Porter View Dining Room (PVR) during lunchtime. Meetings are every other Wednesday at 1pm in room 201 in the College Center. Look in the daily happenings DL Manager e-mail to see what week there will be a meeting.
Free Walk-In Math Tutoring
There is free walk-in peer math tutoring Monday-Thursday in ALT 217. There is a tutor schedule posted on the door to the math lab and students looking for math help are welcome to drop-in anytime. There are often several students studying in the math lab so do not be afraid to ask which one is the tutor. The tutor cannot help you if they don’t know you are looking for math help.
Free Tutoring in the Learning Center
The Learning Center is located on the 4th floor of the KAB. Students struggling in a specific subject can sign up for a free peer tutor in the Learning Center. The Learning Center will then compare schedules and assign a tutoring session. Accomplished students can also sign up and get paid to be tutors in the Learning Center.
The Librarian Help Desk
This is one of my favorite services at the library. Students looking for research materials can sit down with a librarian at the help desk located in the lower level of the library and receive research help. Students simply tell the librarian what they are looking for and the librarian will find all the credible online resources and where any book resources may be found. Books that are not available at the D’Youville library can be ordered through an inter-library loan, but if you are crunched for time and cannot wait for the loaned books to ship the librarian can tell you which libraries you can go pick the books up at. Students can also text a librarian for info on the go by texting “refdesk” to 66746.
Students contributing to the Catalyst, D’Youville’s student run newspaper, can earn up to $15 per issue. Submitted Articles can earn up to $10 and photo submissions can earn students $5. The Catalyst also runs contests in almost every issue, so be sure to pick up an issue and learn how to win an awesome prize.
Nondenominational Prayer Room
Room 322 on the 3rd floor of the KAB is reserved as a nondenominational prayer room that is available to students at all times. Students of any religion can practice in the room whenever they feel called to do so.
Get a Step Ahead with Career Services
The Career Services Center is located on the 3rd flood of the KAB in rooms 315 and 316. Career Services helps students pinpoint what career direction they should take, build resumes/cover letters, discover scholarship opportunities, develop networking skills and opportunities, research and locate internships, and find job opportunities. The center is even available to help students beyond graduation as alumni.
Free Fitness Classes
D’Youville regularly offers classes like yoga, zumba, yogalates, and boxing to students every semester. The classes usually take place in the College Center after 4pm. Specific dates and times can be found by checking the D’Youville calendar. Swim lessons are also offered weekday evenings at D’Youville’s pool if there is enough interest. If you are interested in taking swim lessons at D’Youville e-mail Debbie Owens at firstname.lastname@example.org.
On Sundays at 7pm in the Sacred Heart Chapel on the 3rd floor of the KAB, Catholic Mass is offered by Father Patrick O’Keefe. The mass focuses on the intentions of the students and is only about 30 minutes long. After mass everyone congregates in Father’s office and shares conversation and eats snacks. It is a great way to take some time to focus on God and to take a nice study break.
The Gym Schedule is Posted Online
The gym is available to D’Youville students whenever it is not being utilized by DaVinci High School, for D’Youville events, or by athletic teams. Students can find out when the gym is free to use by checking the gym schedule posted online. Basketballs and other sporting equipment may be checked out with student ID from the fish bowl or the glass office near the front of the College Center.
Free Tech Help
Students can request free tech help for any computer issues they are having through academic computing. Students can also request to borrow audio and visual equipment for meetings, events, projects, and classroom presentations.
Security Escorts are available to students 24/7. Students can contact the security desk at (716) 829-7550 to request a security escort. Security guards will escort students up to a two block radius around campus.
